A Look Back
The Story of Montclair
Before the Settlers

A Serrano Village Along a Sycamore Creek

Long before Montclair Plaza or Interstate 10, this land was home to a Serrano village built along a creek lined with sycamore trees — a peaceful, water-fed spot that later attracted the ranchers and orchard settlers who’d shape the area’s next chapter.

Renamed Because of a Mail Mix-Up

The area’s first modern identity came in 1897 as “The Township of Marquette,” founded by Mrs. Edward Fraser, and by 1900 a 1,000-acre tract had been surveyed and renamed Monte Vista, subdivided into orchard lots to entice settlers to plant citrus and build homes. Just like Highland and Upland, getting that fruit to market quickly was the whole business model — the same essential need for dependable transport across the county that drives our trucks today.

Monte Vista stuck for decades — until it caused a genuine problem. There was another town in Northern California also named Monte Vista, and the mail kept getting confused between them. On April 8, 1958, residents voted overwhelmingly, 1,399 to 212, to rename their city Montclair. Ten years later, Montclair Plaza opened as one of the first enclosed shopping malls in the Inland Empire, permanently reshaping the city’s identity around retail — a source of local pride Montclair still carries today.

Did You Know?

Montclair used to be called Monte Vista — the city was renamed in 1958 simply because its mail kept getting mixed up with a different Monte Vista in Northern California.
