Serrano Land, Centuries Before Rialto Had a Name
Archaeological evidence shows Serrano people living in what’s now Rialto as far back as 1500 AD, part of the same broad Serrano homeland that stretched across the San Bernardino Valley and up into the mountains — territory the Serrano called their own for centuries before any Spanish name was attached to it.
Named for a Bridge in Venice — Maybe
Nobody fully agrees on where Rialto got its name. Some say it’s a contraction of the Spanish “Rio Alto,” or “high river.” Others insist the town’s founders named it after Venice’s famous Rialto Bridge, hoping their new California settlement would mirror that city’s prosperity — a proud, almost audacious bit of naming ambition for a brand-new frontier town. The Semi-Tropic Land and Water Company laid out Rialto’s townsite in 1887, right after the Santa Fe Railroad extended its line between San Bernardino and Los Angeles.
In one of the great what-ifs of Southern California history, a local newspaper reported in 1888 that the University of Southern California was considering building an entire campus in Rialto. Instead, the city grew into a citrus and vineyard town, with fruit packing plants and roadside orange juice stands lining the streets well into the 1950s — and Rialto still carries pride today as a stop on historic Route 66.
A San Bernardino newspaper once reported that USC was scouting Rialto as the site for a brand-new university campus — it never happened, but it almost did.
