A City Still Split Between Farmland and Freight
Jurupa Valley hasn’t fully traded its agricultural identity for a logistics one — dairies and produce operations still work the land along the Santa Ana River bottom, even as new distribution centers rise around them. Where Four Nations’ Territories Met
Jurupa Valley sits at a genuine crossroads: the traditional territories of four different peoples — the Gabrielino, Cahuilla, Serrano, and Luiseño — all meet here. A Tongva (Gabrielino) village called Horuuvngna once stood in what’s now Jurupa Valley, and the name “Jurupa” itself is a blend of two native languages: “Juru” is the Gabrielino word for California sagebrush, and “-pa” is a Serrano ending. The Santa Ana River that runs through the valley later became a real Gold Rush panning site once American settlers arrived.
California’s Newest City, Built on Its Oldest Land Grant
In 1838, the Mexican government granted this land to Juan Bandini as Rancho Jurupa, one of the largest land grants in the region. For more than 170 years afterward, the area stayed a patchwork of unincorporated communities — Mira Loma, Rubidoux, Pedley, Glen Avon, Sunnyslope — governed directly by Riverside County.
Residents actually tried to incorporate once before and voted it down in 1992. It took until July 1, 2011 for the area to finally become the City of Jurupa Valley — the 482nd city in California, driven largely by a desire for local police services and control over zoning.
Jurupa Valley was the last new city to incorporate in California for over a decade — no other California community became its own city again until 2024.
