A Colony Built on Two Orange Trees
Riverside was founded in 1870 as a planned agricultural colony along the Santa Ana River. Just three years later, in 1873, a settler named Eliza Tibbets planted two Washington navel orange cuttings sent to her from Brazil via the USDA — cuttings that sparked California’s entire citrus industry. One of those original trees, now a protected California Historical Landmark, still stands in Riverside today at the corner of Magnolia and Arlington Avenues.
By 1882, nearly half of California’s half-million citrus trees were growing in Riverside, and between refrigerated railcars and inventive irrigation, the city became the wealthiest in America per capita by 1895.
That fortune built the Mission Inn, developed by Frank Miller starting in 1902, which hosted an astonishing guest list: the Reagans honeymooned there, the Nixons married on its grounds, and Teddy Roosevelt personally planted a tree in its courtyard. The hotel’s annual Festival of Lights once held a Guinness World Record for the most lights ever strung on a single structure.
